PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-vehicle image recognition method and an on-vehicle image recognizer of a simple structure which use a monitor camera to assist the driver of a vehicle and detects the obstacles including the vehicles ahead, etc. SOLUTION: A left camera 101 and a right camera 102 are attached symmetrical to each other at the inside upper positions of front glass 110 of a vehicle 100, and an image recognition processing/control unit 103 is contained in an engine room 112, for example, to process the monitor images of both cameras 101 and 102 and to assist the driver of the vehicle 100. The unit 103 detects the reference point of the number plate 301 of a vehicle ahead to decide its coordinates by means of the images of the camera 101 and then searches for the vehicle ahead, i.e., an object via the camera 102 in response to the coordinate value.
