Process for the preparation of metformin clofibrate

Metformin clofibrate (the salt of 2-(p-chlorophenoxy)-2-methylpropionic acid with N<1>,N<1>-dimethylbiguanide) is obtained by reacting clofibric acid with metformin. The latter is obtained by conversion of its hydrochloride to the free base using ion exchange. The new salt is useful as a medicament. It makes possible, for example, the control of glycaemia and the treatment of vascular complications of diabetes.
