Digital data transmission method e.g. for audio data

The method involves transmitting digital source- and control data between data sources and sinks, which are subscribers of a communications network. The source- and control data are transferred in a format which is a clocked sequence of individual bit groups of equal length. Predetermined bit positions in the individual bit groups are reserved for source and control data. An adjustable range (8) of the bit positions is reserved for the source data within a bit group (1). The source data are transferred in data packets (13) each of which comprise a beginning and a defined length and which are associated with a subscriber address (15).
