摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston of an internal combustion engine capable of preventing damage of the top wall surface of the piston and the piston ring caused by the pressure inside a combustion chamber while reducing the weight. SOLUTION: The piston has a groove 7 extending along the whole circumference of the piston on the outer peripheral region of the piston top wall surface 2 which forms the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. The pressure heightened by fuel combustion is propagated around toward the inner wall surface of a cylinder from the combustion point. However, the pressure isn't evenly propagated from the center of the piston 1 toward the circumference, and therefore, there are regions where the pressure is high and where the pressure is low inside the combustion chamber, and especially in the peripheral region of the combustion chamber. In the piston, the extremely high pressure is propagated along the groove 7 to the region where the pressure is relatively low. Therefore, since there is no region where the pressure is high in the piston, damages on the top wall surface 2 of the piston 1 or the piston ring 4 can be prevented.
