<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compensate a color signal by optimizing video characteristics of a display video signal and to improve display visibility in a display, such as an on-vehicle display, in which environmental illuminance in use changes considerably. <P>SOLUTION: An input video signal is converted into a color space comprising saturation, hue, and a brightness signal, and distribution states of a minimum value, maximum value, and signal level are detected by a brightness characteristics detecting means 4 and saturation characteristics detecting means 5 as video characteristic information on the brightness and saturation components for each of a plurality of prescribed areas within a screen of an image. In a saturation brightness video adaptive control means 6, a compensation control amount adaptive to the video characteristics is calculated every prescribed area by considering the distribution states of the detected brightness and saturation of the detected input video. By a brightness compensation processing means 2 and saturation compensation processing means 3, compensation processing of the brightness and saturation is performed every prescribed area and the compensation processing is performed so as to secure sufficient hue differences in color space of a different display image.
