Drug prescription and management system

A drug prescription and management system for the sate and accurate prescribing and dispensing of a patient's medication. comprises: (i) a read/write computer chip (RWC) which is carried by a patient; (ii) a first RWC reader/writer connectable to a first computing means for access by the prescriber; (iii) an adverse drag reaction (APR) database and prescribing program configured to be connected to the first computing means and (iv) a second RWC reader/writer connectable to a second computing means located at a pharmacy for access by an authorized pharmacist/dispenser. The RWC is configured to contain: information allowing verification of the patient's identity, the identification the patient's and prescriber'(s) demographic status, patient's history of drug allergies/adverse reactions, current medication list and relevant physiologic variables which may impact on prescribing decisions. The first computing means is adapted to allow information stored on a patient's RWC to be viewed, read and updated by the prescriber via the first computing means. The prescribing program after verifying the patient's identity, checks an authorized prescriber's choice of prescribed medication using data stored in the adverse drug reaction database against the information stored on the RWC. An alert is raised if there is any adverse reaction of the prescribed medication with the patient's current medication and/or allergies and to allow for any authorized change to prescribed medication to be updated to the RWC. The APR database and prescribing program is adapted to allow the alert to be over-ridden by the prescriber if clinically appropriate. The second computing means is adapted to allow the current prescription stored on the RWC to be viewed and the prescribed medication to be dispensed and information updated to the RWC indicating that dispensing has occurred.
