Disclosed are a method and apparatus for determining a transmission mode in a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system. The method for determining a transmission mode comprises the steps of: determining an optimum transmission mode of a virtual MIMO system having a number of antennas smaller than the number of transmission and reception antennas of an actual MIMO system; determining whether a space-time block code method for the determined optimum transmission mode corresponds to a Vertical-Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) method; and determining, when it is determined that the space-time block code method corresponds to the V-BLAST method, an optimum transmission mode of the actual MIMO system, among transmission mode candidates exclusive of a transmission mode candidate having an Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (OSTBC) method, to be a space-time block code method. |
