In a non-aq. storage battery having a positive electrode (38) and a negative electrode (39) reversibly absorbing and discharging an alkali metal and a non-aq. electrolyte, the negative electrode discharge capacity is 1000-2500 mA.hrs./cm<3> during the period between the moment at which the battery starts to be discharged, in a state corresp. to a constant current of 0.5 mA/cm<2>. after having been charged, and the moment at which the voltage between the negative and positive electrodes becomes 1.0 V. Also claimed are similar non-aq. storage batteries in which the negative electrode (39) is formed of an intermetallic cpd. which (a) has a CaF2, ZnS or AlLiSi type crystalline structure, the CaF2 type structure being an inverse fluorspar structure or a fluorspar structure with a lattice constant of > 6.36?A; (b) contains /-1 of Gp. IVb elements, P and Sb and has a structure as in (a); (c) belongs to the cubic crystalline system and has the structure as in (a); (d) has the F4-3m lattice space group; or (e) consists of Mg2Sn, Mg2Pb, NiSi2, AlP, AlSb, CuMgSb, Mg2Ge or CoSi2. Further claimed are storage battery negative electrode materials having the above characteristics. |
