Polyimides comprising repeating units of the general formula (I); and polyamic acids comprising repeating units of the general formula (IV): wherein R>1< and R>2< are each H or C>1-20< alkyl; Z is a fused polycyclic aromatic group or a group of the general formula (i), (ii), (iii), (iv), or (v): X is -CO- or -C(=N>2<)-; Y is a direct bond, -CH>2<-, -O-, -SO>2<-, -S-, -CO-, or -C(=N>2<)-; W is a direct bond, -CH>2<-,-C(CH>3<)>2<-, -C(CF>3<)>2<-, -S-, -SO-, -SO>2<-, or O-; b, m and n are each 0 or 1; r is C>1-4< alkyl, halogeno, or phenyl; and a is 0 to 3.
