PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for economically and highly efficiently producing a metal Ti or a Ti alloy with a high purity without using a costly reductant. SOLUTION: The method includes holding, in a reaction vessel 1, a molten salt containing CaCl<SB>2</SB>and Ca dissolved therein; performing electrolysis in the molten salt in the reaction vessel; and generating particulate Ti or Ti alloy in the molten salt by supplying a metallic chloride containing TiCl<SB>4</SB>to the molten salt so as to react with Ca generated on a cathode side by electrolysis. The reaction vessel 1 includes a membrane which partitions the inside of the reaction vessel into a side of an anode and a side of a cathode. The membrane blocks the movement of Ca generated on the cathode side in the reaction vessel toward the anode side while permitting the molten salt to flow in the reaction vessel. The metal chloride containing TiCl<SB>4</SB>is supplied into the molten salt at the cathode side in the reaction vessel, thereby allowing a back reaction by Ca to be effectively suppressed.
