PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press die, a method of treating the surface of the press die by which the non-defective rate of workpieces after press working can be maintained at a high level even when foreign matter such as iron powder adhered to the surface of the die and a method of producing the car body of an automobile. SOLUTION: This press die 1 for forming the sheet metal has a curved surface part 11 in which the surface 2 of the die is formed with a curved surface and an approximate plane part 12 in which the surface 2 of the die is formed with the approximate plane and many depressions 3 are formed only on the surface 2 of the die in the approximate plane part 12. It is preferable that the surface 2 of the die in the curved surface part 11 has the radius of curvature of≤5 mm and it is preferable that the surface 2 of the die in the approximate plane part 12 has the radius of curvature of >5 mm.
