PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and materials useful for applying moxifloxacin to the ear.SOLUTION: The present invention provides formulations for administering moxifloxacin to the middle ear of a mammal, the formulations being aqueous, containing a viscogenic agent and moxifloxacin, being flowable, having a viscosity of less than 100,000 cps at 25°C, and forming a gel that has a yield stress of at least 39 Pa after application to the epithelium surface of the tympanic membrane, wherein the moxifloxacin transfers through the tympanic membrane into the middle ear space in a sufficient amount to maintain levels greater than 10 μg/ml for at least 24 hours in the middle ear space.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9 |
