A wire tying machine for receiving a wire spool, the machine comprising first and second detectors for detecting first and second identifications provided by first and second indicators on the spool, wherein the first and second detectors are so configured that the first detector detects the first indicator after the first indicator is separated from the spool, wherein the wire tying machine comprises an aperture arranged to receive the first indicator, and wherein the first detector is configured such that the first detector detects the first indicator when it is placed into the aperture.
