The invention relates to a device for automatic registration and display of telephone costs depending on the respective valid charge units and call times. In the known devices, a disadvantage for the user lies in that he cannot easily ascertain for himself the telephone charges accrued within a specific telephone call period. In order to offer a workable solution, it is proposed according to the invention to provide the parties to the call with enough time to decide whether the telephone call should be interrupted within the currently running charge unit or continued at the cost of one or more additional charge units. The invention is based on the problem of devising charging facilities for using the telephone system implemented here, which cater in simple fashion for the likelihood that the telephone users will make full use of the call duration per charge and thus per time unit. As a solution to this problem, it is proposed according to the invention to equip the device with an electronically controlled metering mechanism which acoustically or optically indicates the end of the call duration for the respective current charge unit in good time so that the parties to the call are given enough time to decide whether the telephone call should be interrupted within the currently running charge unit or continued at the cost of one or more additional charge units.
