<p>This invention is a method for automatically maintaining a desired safety margin associated with a current pacing output of the cardiac pacer to thereby minimize the need for backup pacing, and maximize the efficiency of the cardiac pacer circuitry. The method may be implemented in a cardiac pacer to reduce power consumption while assuring therapeutic efficacy.
