PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which prevents a floating cover without increasing the cost. SOLUTION: In the image reader provided with a shading correction means, an LED lap in a read part 1 is lit for a prescribed time before image read to read a shading correction signal for correction of the white reference level by an image sensor in the read part 1, and a control part 3 detects the cover open state based on the value of the read shading correction signal, and a cover open indicator in an operation part 4 is lit if the cover open state is detected.
