<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element in which the deterioration of contrast ratio of a display image upon high-duty drive is suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element 1 comprises: a liquid crystal cell 2 provided with a liquid crystal layer, inserted and held between a pair of substrates whose surfaces are subjected to vertical alignment treatment, made of liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy; and a pair of polarizing plates 3, 4 which hold the liquid crystal cell 2 therebetween and are arranged such that an intersection angle between an absorption axis of one side polarizing plate and an absorption axis of the other side polarizing plate becomes 90°±5°. A layer structure 5 made of a retardation film of at least two layers having optical axes different from each other is disposed between at least one side of the polarizing plates 3, 4 and the liquid crystal cell 2.
