<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wear amount detecting means free of damage to a holder side plate for accurately detecting an average value for the wear amount of seal rubbers arranged in a plurality of vertical stages while remote monitoring the wear amount of the seal rubbers. <P>SOLUTION: This seal rubber wear detecting method for a gas holder is provided for detecting the wear amount of the upper seal rubber 31 and the lower seal rubber 32 which hold air tightness between the side plate 2 of the cylindrical gas holder 1 and a piston 8 sliding up and down along the holder side plate 2. Herein, a non-contact type distance sensor 58 which is integrally fixed to a supporting member 34 being the same as the seal rubber is provided in a clearance between the seal rubbers 31, 32 provided in multiple stages at a vertical interval.
