PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the operability at the formation of a pompon, and to enable the pompon to be formed while facilitating the control of a fiber for forming a yarn ball. SOLUTION: The material 1 for forming the pompon is the material for forming the pompon 7 in a desired shape by bundling and tightly binding fibers for forming the yarn ball 5, and shaping the periphery thereof, and is obtained by knitting the fibers into a belt shape by forming the fibers forming the yarn balls 5 into crossed yarn 4, 4, 4 states over stitches 3 and 3 formed at a prescribed interval in a needle bed of a flat knitting machine. The method for forming the pompon includes a knitting step for forming the belt-shaped knit 2 by repeating the knitting of missing between the stitches 3 and 3 formed at least two positions separated in the longitudinal direction of the needle bed to form the fiber for forming the yarn ball into the crossed yarn state, a step for forming the yarn ball 5 by bundling the belt-shaped knit 2, and a step for shaping the whole into a desired shape.
