A magnetic tape cassette recorder has a front loading system has a single electric motor (2) with reduction gears (5,6,7) that are coupled to a toothed rack (10). The movement of the rack is used to effect loading and unloading of the cassette. The pinion (3) on the motor output shaft also engages with a worm gear (4). The tape handling mechanism that draws tape from the cassette and into contact with the head drum is based upon a ring gear (18) in mesh with gears (14,15). At the end of cassette loading is sorted over gear pinion (12) is moved to engage the ring gear which rotates with rollers (20) moving the tape to the operating position.
