The steering system has a steered wheel position generator unit (12a), a mechanical displacement arrangement (22a) coupled to the steered wheels and at least one electric motor (28a) for generating the steering forces. The generator unit has a steering wheel mechanically coupled to the displacement arrangement via a torque transfer device (30a) that transfers forces between the motor and displacement arrangement damped according to damping set by the control unit (26a) independently of slip and/or torque/revolution rate non-uniformities determined by the motor speed.
