PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem on fly-up of a material in charging the material into a furnace in the electric furnace for melting the particulate material. SOLUTION: A material charging cylinder 12 for charging the material 3 into the furnace from a furnace body side face is opened near an upper face of a molten slag 6, the material 3 supplied into the material charging cylinder 12 is pushed out into the furnace by a pusher 15, a stop position of pushing-out stroke of the pusher 15 is determined at a specific distance from an opening end 12a of the material charging cylinder 12, and the material is reserved in a zone of the specific distance. As the material 3 can be horizontally charged at the position near the upper face of the molten slag 6, the fly-up of the material 3 can be prevented. Further the flowing of an exhaust gas into the material charging cylinder 12 can be prevented by the material 3 reserved on a furnace side of the material charging cylinder 12.
