PURPOSE: A mold slag having the optimum composition is provided which prevents cracks from forming on the surface of medium carbon steel produced by continuous casting. CONSTITUTION: In a mold slag injected into a mold during continuous casting of steel, the mold slag comprises 2 to 7 wt.% of Al2O3, 3 to 14 wt.% of Na2O, 2 to 8 wt.% of Fe, 2 to 15 wt.% of MgO and a balance of CaO, SiO2 and other inevitable impurities, and a basicity (CaO/SiO2) that is a weight ratio of the CaO to SiO2 is 1.19 to 1.6, wherein Na2O/Fe(weight ratio of the Na2O to Fe) is 1.0 to 2.5, and wherein the steel contains 0.08 to 0.3 wt.% of carbon (C).
