PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an multimode dispersion compensating fiber that is very wide in a wavelength region intended for a high transmission bandwidth and that is suitable for wavelength multiplexing, and also to provide a mode dispersion compensating method, an optical waveguide, an optical transmission line and an optical communication system using this fiber. SOLUTION: When connected to a fiber to be compensated, i.e., a fiber composed of a Ge added multimode fiber which is optimized in the 1.3μm wavelength band to have a maximum transmission bandwidth in the wavelength and which is prepared by adding Ge to fused quartz as dopant, the multimode dispersion compensating fiber (MM-DCF) has a characteristic in that it compensates mode dispersion in a manner that the transmission bandwidth becomes higher in the wavelength or the wavelength band other than the 1.3μm band.
