The invention relates to a lubricating oil filter 10 for an internal combustion engine. The filter housing 11 has a main oil filter element 12 and a reserve oil filter element 13, which can be switched into the lubricating oil flow in place of the main oil filter element, serving as back-up for the main oil filter element. A valve 30, which is moved by way of a differential pressure switch 43 by means of a solenoid 39 and controls the lubricating oil flow through the reserve oil filter element, is held in its position releasing the lubricating oil flow through the reserve oil filter element by a catch device 25, 29. The catch device can be disengaged only when the oil filter elements are removed from their operating position fitted in the filter housing. As a result, the need to change the filter element is brought promptly to the attention of the driver, whilst complete filtering of the lubricating oil is still assured for a sufficient length of time. <IMAGE>
