A submersible lamp for a photochemical reactor consists of a discharge lamp (2) located in an outer tube (1) through which an inert gas is flowing. The lamp has axially opposed mechanically stable electrical connections. These connections are held and contacted in a connection area of the tube, which has an open end which extends into a chamber (9) in a head section (7) for electrical contact and mechanical support. The open end of the outer tube is surrounded by elastic seal(s) (10, 11) located axially inelastic planes (13). These planes contain openings for the end (8) of the outer tube (1) and for bolts (19) which compress the seals (10, 11) and deform them radially so that they are in contact both with the external surface of the outer tube and the inner wall of the chamber (9). The open end of the outer tube is thereby fixed and centred in the head section (7). Also claimed is the use of this lamp in photochemical or UV oxidn. processes. One or more seals (10, 11) are pref. provided along the axis (12) of the outer tube, and have a single inelastic plate located between them. In the region of the seals, the inner wall of the chamber (9) is pref. in the form of a hollow cylinder. The head section (7) has a lower flange (16) with blind screwed holes (17) for the ends of the bolts (19). The outer tube (1) is pref. in the form of a cylinder which is closed at one end, but may also be in the form of a cylinder open at both ends and provided with a head section at either end. USE/ADVANTAGE - In photochemical reactions. The lamp has a mechanically strong and tightly sealed head section, and its construction facilitates installation and operation and in particular the exchanging of the outer tube or the discharge lamp.
