The present invention relates to a watch type mobile terminal, which enables each configuration elements to be separated in order to execute various functions, and a control method thereof. The watch type mobile terminal includes: a body; an infrared communication unit generating an infrared signal; a communication unit which performs a wireless communication operation; a sensing unit sensing that a first device capable of receiving the infrared signal and the body are attached to each other; and a control unit which controls the infrared communication unit to generate the infrared signal for controlling the first device based on a control signal related to the first device and received from a second device through the communication unit when it determined that the body and the first device are attached, and which transmits the generated infrared signal to the first device through the infrared communication unit.
