METHOD FOR PRODUCING FUEL PELLET AND OTHER PRODUCTS FROM LIGNOCELLULOSIC BIOMASS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing products such as fuel pellets from lignocellulosic biomass.SOLUTION: In one embodiment, the method for producing fuel pellets is provided that comprises: introducing lignocellulosic biomass having a moisture content of less than about 30 wt.% into a reactor; applying a vacuum of less than about 500 torr to the reactor; injecting steam having a temperature of between about 180°C and about 235°C into the reactor; maintaining the biomass in the reactor for 1 to 12 minutes; removing the treated biomass having a moisture content less than about 30% by weight from the reactor; and forming treated biomass into a pellet. In another embodiment, the method for producing fuel pellets is provided that is identical to the method in the above one embodiment except that less than 50 wt.% of a carbon source such as coal refuse and powder of coke is added to the biomass.SELECTED DRAWING: None
