<p>Machinery for wrapping an article in part of a continuous sheet of film, paper etc. is designed to fix the leading edge of the wrapping material to the article and then rotate the item normal to the sheet axis to wind the wrapping about the article until it can be cut and secured over the leading edge to provide a complete envelope. The item to be wrapped may be compressed between a pair of platens of which at least one can be moved on support rails which pref. are vertical, so that compression is normal the axis of rotation which is pref. horizontal. Pressure may be applied to obtain a constant packing pressure using fluid power, or a constant pack vol, set by mechanical stops. Alternatively compression may be applied via a controlled tension on the wrapping film during winding, the tension being adjusted by e.g. a belting loop brake on the sheet drum axle, the belt grip being applied by a piston actuated lever. A reciprocating cutter severs the secured pack from the stock sheet. Can be applied to a succession of articles of various different sizes and/or to reduce the vol. of compressible articles during packing.</p> |
