Corrosion resistant, tough, non-magnetic, low nickel steel alloy has a homogeneous austenitic textured structure and is of the composition (wt.%): 0.2 Ni, 0.6 C, 0.5 Si, 2-26.0 Mn, 8.0-24 Cr, 2.5-10 Mo, 0-10 W, 0.55-1.2 N, 0-0.20 S, <5 Bi, Cu and Co, <1 V, Nb, Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta and Al, <0.02 boron, balance Fe and melt impurities. The following two conditions are satisfied: (1) Cr+3.3Mo+3.3W+20N <= 25; and (2) Crequiv-8 <= Niequiv <= 25 (Niequiv = Ni+Co+0.44Cu+0.1.Mn-0.01Mn<2>+18N+30C; and Crequiv = Cr+1.5Mo+1.5W+0.48Si+2.3V+1.75Nb). Also claimed are the method of manufacture and treatment, and uses in contact with the human body.
