The restraint for a motor vehicle seat occupant has a safety belt (13) with a contact face (25) to engage a user (4) in the seat, and a tensioner for impact situations. The tensioner has a fluid operated actuator (26a,b) which has a pressure chamber (32) to cause a longitudinal contraction tube (27) to reduce in length. At least one contraction assembly is positioned adjacent to the belt contact face.
