PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high voltage discharge lamp lighting device in which the lamp can be started surely, and reliability of a circuit can be secured regardless of changes in values of a circuit element and changes in inductance and capacity of load at the starting time of the high pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: In the high voltage discharge lamp lighting device, which is composed of a direct current power output circuit that outputs a direct current power, an alternating current power supply circuit in order to convert the direct current power into an alternating current power and to impress it on the high voltage discharging lamp, a resonance circuit that makes the alternating power resonate to impress the resonance voltage to the high voltage discharge lamp during the period prior to a discharge starting of the high voltage discharge lamp, and an igniter circuit that superposes the voltage further on the resonance voltage and makes the high voltage discharge lamp start, this is arranged to be provided with a detecting means that detects the resonance voltage, and with a control means that controls, based on detected signals from the detecting device, a frequency of the alternating current from the alternating current power supply circuit so that the resonance voltage becomes constant.
