There is provided a method of detecting minute foreign matter in the entire mass of fluid. Part of the passage for fluid is constructed of a transparent member. Light is emitted in a direction substantially parallel with the axis of the fluid passage so as to surround the passage. Light scattered by foreign matter in the fluid is observed from a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction of the passage to detect any minute foreign matter in the fluid. <IMAGE>
