A portable terminal and a method for controlling the brightness of a light-emitting element are provided to prevent the power from being unnecessarily consumed through an LED or LCD. A portable terminal comprises a power supply unit(10), an LED/LCD module(20), a variable resistor(100) and a button for controlling the external brightness(200). The variable resistor is positioned between the LED/LCD module and power supply unit to control the voltage provided from the power supply unit. The external brightness control button is connected to the variable resistor and is positioned at outer one side of the portable terminal to enable a user to physically control the resistance of the variable resistor. A user can adjust the brightness of the LED or LCD simultaneously or individually by using a control processor(30) driven through the software of the portable terminal.
