PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smooth slant lines in a recorded image by instructing the recording of black dots in the area of a prescribed ratio in a prescribed area to an image recording means when a slant line image is discriminated. SOLUTION: Binary image data inputted from an input part 1 are successively stored in a 3×3 buffer memory 8a secured as one part of storage areas inside a RAM. At a slant line detection part 2, 3×3 slant line pixel patterns are provided. When a concerned picture element E in the 3×3 buffer memory 8a is a black picture element, pattern matching is performed between 3×3 picture elements with that concerned picture element E as a center and a slant line pixel pattern and when they are coincident, the concerned picture element E is discriminated as a slant line part. The discriminated result of the slant line detecting part 2 is reported to an output determining part 4. When the reported result is 'coincidence', the output determining part 4 instructs it to an output part 5 that a duty ratio in the case of recording the black dots corresponding to the concerned picture element E is to be 50%, for example.
