PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a head and an electrode member are connected by a liquid column to cause a short circuit and generate air bubbles in the head leading to discharge abnormality.SOLUTION: A discharge detection unit 100 has a box shaped holder member 103 integrally formed with a receiving member 102 which receives a liquid discharged from a liquid discharge head 4. An upper surface of the holder member 103 serves as a receiving surface 102a which receives the liquid discharged from the head 4. In the holder member 103, an electrode plate 101 is disposed at the opposite side (a rear surface) of the receiving surface 102a to which the liquid of the receiving member 102 adheres. The holder member 103 including a portion serving as the receiving member 102 is formed by an insulation member made of an insulation material such as plastic.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
