In a wheeled vehicle (11) there is provided a means to supply pressurized brake fluid to actuate the wheel brakes of the vehicle, and includes an anti-skid brake control system (9). The control system comprises: an operator actuated control (10) to determine the operator commanded supply of brake fluid; a means (23) responsive to the operator input (10) to control directly the operator commanded brake fluid supply; means (14) to determine the commanded wheel deceleration (Wp) and a means to measure the wheel velocity. There is also provided a means (25, 29, 33, 35) to calculate a wheel deceleration upper bound (maximum, Wa) dependent upon the magnitude of the wheel velocity, and a means to select the lesser in magnitude of the commanded wheel deceleration and upper bound wheel deceleration. If the commanded wheel deceleration is selected, then the commanded brake fluid pressure is supplied to the brakes. If the upper bound wheel deceleration is selected, then a lesser brake fluid pressure determined by the deceleration upper bound is supplied.
