A fabric guiding mechanism for a sewing machine has a wheel (15) upstream of the presser foot (9) with its axis parallel to the fabric forwarding direction. The wheel (15) is in a recess (16) in the work table (4) and carries free running annular rollers (17) projecting above the work table (4). The wheel is driven by a drive (18,19,20,21) which is controlled by a photocell (13). The fabric can be pressed against the work table (4) or air jets (27,28). A spring loaded forwarding roller (33) can assist the fabric movement. USE/ADVANTAGE - The invention is a simple fabric guiding device which can be fitted to sewing machines without major alterations.
