PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a coefft. of friction reduced to a sufficiently low range for practical use and capable of improving durability without using a larger amt. of a lubricant than the conventional amt. in a magnetic recording medium using fine magnetic powder of <=0.1μm major axis size or without extremely deteriorating electromagnetic transducing characteristics owing to the use of a solid lubricant such as carbon black. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer 2 contg. magnetic powder is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 to obtain the objective recording medium. The major axis size of the magnetic powder is <=0.1μm, an abrasive material of 0.2-0.5μm average particle diameter is contained in the magnetic layer 2 by 8-12 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the magnetic powder and the surface roughness SRa of the substrate 1 is 10-13nm.
