<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide plate-like alumina which has a high aspect ratio and is obtained by using, as raw materials, a water soluble aluminum salt except aluminum sulfate, especially a water soluble basic aluminum salt such as basic aluminum chloride, an alkali metal sulfate, an water soluble phosphate, and a cobalt salt; and to provide a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the plate-like alumina comprises mixing a water soluble aluminum salt except aluminum sulfate, especially a water soluble basic aluminum salt such as basic aluminum chloride, an alkali metal sulfate, an water soluble phosphate, and a water soluble cobalt salt, then subjecting the resulting mixture to a melting treatment, and washing formed alumina.
