The air bag unit has a tubular-shaped gas generator (14) which extends over the whole width of a fastening frame (3). At least one fastening element (15,16) is joined to the fastening frame and/or the baseplate (2). The entire air bag assembly can be installed on the vehicle bodywork or within the dashboard using the fastening elements to hold it in place. The components of the unit are so arranged that there are no upwardly pointing edges. USE/ADVANTAGE - Safety system for aircraft allows the air bag to be installed as a completely pre-assembled unit.
