(2-hydroxyalkyl)-substituted beta-dicarbonyl compounds are produced by reacting beta-dicarbonyl compounds having the formula R<1>-CO-CH2-CO-R<2>, in which R<1> and R<2> represent independently from each other alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or alkoxy residues with 1 to 6 carbon atoms, with 1,2-epoxyalkanes having formula (II), in which R<3> represents an alkyl residue with 6 to 24 carbon atoms, in the presence of polyalkylene glycolethers and/or anorganic or organic bases. The beta-dicarbonyl compounds thus produced are useful as starting materials for the production of heterocyclic compounds for the synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals and plant protective products.
