<p>A method of characterising a fermentation process comprising the steps of: (i) taking a series of samples from a fermentation broth at pre-determined times; (ii) measuring the zeta potential or electrophoretic mobility of cells present in each sample, or the velocity or displacement of said cells in an electric field; (iii) logging the measurements obtained in step (ii) against time whereby a profile of the fermentation process is produced and whereby the fermentation process is characterised in terms of a zeta potential or electrophoretic mobility profile, or velocity/displacement profile in an electric field, of a cell moiety or moieties present in the fermentation broth. The invention also includes a method of controlling a fermentation process and apparatus for performing these methods.</p> |
