<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable dispersion compensator and a variable dispersion compensation method which are easily controlled with a simple constitution. <P>SOLUTION: The variable dispersion compensator 201 has such a constitution that first to nth ring resonators 202<SB>1</SB>to 202<SB>n</SB>having the same delay time spectrum are arranged in series. The resonators are provided with first to nth ring-shaped waveguides 204<SB>1</SB>to 204<SB>n</SB>for a common linear waveguide 203 through directional couplers 206<SB>1</SB>to 206<SB>n</SB>. Heaters 205<SB>1</SB>to 205<SB>2</SB>are disposed in the first to nth ring-shaped waveguides 204<SB>1</SB>to 204<SB>n</SB>. By controlling temperatures of the heaters, central wavelengths of the respective ring resonators 202<SB>1</SB>to 202<SB>n</SB>are controlled and the dispersion of an optical signal inputted to the waveguide 203 is compensated. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
