PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which transfer efficiency is improved by making a peripheral speed difference between each image carrier and an intermediate transfer belt and, at the same time, color misalignment caused by the speed difference can be prevented. SOLUTION: Image carrier pulleys 20a<SB>Y</SB>, 20a<SB>M</SB>, 20a<SB>C</SB>, and 20a<SB>K</SB>for their respective image carriers 20 are driven by an image carrier drive belt 53 driven by a drive pulley 50 for the image carrier drive belt. At this time, the speed difference has been set such that the peripheral speed V<SB>TB</SB>of the intermediate transfer belt 16 to which toner images are transferred by the contact of the image carriers 20 is higher than the peripheral speed V<SB>PC</SB>of each of the image carriers 20. In addition, a tension pulley 54 is provided for applying tension to a belt segment 53d on the tight belt side from the belt drive pulley 50 for the image carrier drive belt. Even in the event that the belt segment 53d on the tight belt side slacks due to the speed difference, this slack is absorbed by the tension pulley 54.
