PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accomplish a system and a method for enhancing display of character information in a video stream displayed on a portable device. SOLUTION: In the system and the method, as one embodiment, character information is identified in frames of a video stream and is enhanced to improve visual readability of the character information. The character information may be enhanced by enlarging portions of frames of the video stream that include the character information to overlay other portions of the display screen. The character information may also be enhanced by converting the character information in the frames of the video stream into character glyphs for display on the display screen of the portable device. Identification and enhancement of the character information may be performed within the portable device or within systems external to the portable device and may be performed by automated procedures or responsive to user input on the portable device.
