An image processing method and an image processing device wherein the edge parts and the flat parts of an original image are separately recognized and a first nonlinear smoothing effective for the edge parts is performed to provide first data, while a second nonlinear smoothing effective for the flat parts is performed to provide seconde data. The first data are applied to the edge parts and the second data are applied to the flat parts to reconstruct the image. The image processing method is stored in the form of program codes in a recording medium from which a computer can read information.
