PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrolyte capable of being used as reaction solvents for chemical reaction, metal plating and the like, for charge-coupled device cameras and various electrochemical cells and especially used preferably for photoelectrochemical cells and the like by containing a specific liquid crystal compound. SOLUTION: This electrolyte is obtained by containing a liquid crystal compound expressed by formula I [R111 is a (substituted)alkyl or a (substituted) alkenyl which bind directly or through a divalent bonding group; Z111 is an atomic group capable of forming a 5-or 6membered ring aromatic heterocyclic cation with N; R121 is a substituent capable of imparting liquid crystallinity and including at least one divalent cyclic bonding group and one (substituted) alkyl or (substituted)alkenyl; X is an anion]. As an example of the compound of formula I, a compound expressed by formula II is cited. The electrolyte contains preferably >=50 mass %, more preferably >=80 mass % of the compound expressed by formula I.
