PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of efficiently performing a cleaning operation at a calibration time, even in the state with a large amount of toner to be removed. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: photoreceptors 20 for forming toner images thereon; a belt-like intermediate transfer belt 22 disposed facing the photoreceptors 20, to which the toner images formed on the photoreceptors 20 are transferred; a secondary transfer part 17 for transferring the toner images on the intermediate transfer belt 22 to the surface of a recording medium; a cleaning device 25 disposed on the downstream side of the secondary transfer part 17 in the rotational moving direction of the intermediate transfer belt 22, for removing deposits on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 22; and an elastically deformable sheet member 30 disposed between the secondary transfer part 17 and the cleaning device 25, for adjusting the amount of the surface deposit per unit area on the intermediate transfer belt 22.
