The present invention relates to the expression and optimisation of enzymes involved in the breakdown of lignocellulosic biomass. The present invention relates more specifically to variants of Trichoderma reesei endoglucanase II, and the use of said variants having an improved performance in methods of breaking down cellulose and producing biofuel.

1. An isolated or purified polypeptide characterized in that it has an improved endoglucanase activity compared with the endoglucanase activity of the EG2 reference protein, said polypeptide being chosen from the group consisting of:
